Did you miss this Expo and don't want to wait until fall for the next one? Check out the Spring Expo University of Oklahoma has planned.

Sixth Annual Student Expo -- Bigger and Better!

The AAPG/SEG Student Expo was held at Rice University and the Radisson Hotel Astrodome Convention Center in Houston on October 5-6th 2003. This event gave geoscience students a chance to show off their talents and network with industry representatives.

The Expo is an outreach program designed to work two ways: It enables students to network with industry, and it gives recruiters a cost-efficient means to meet a large diverse number of students face-to-face.

Optional fieldtrips of an Anadarko Drilling Rig and Quaternary Coastal Deposits of East Texas greeted participants Sunday morning. That evening the Expo’s "Icebreaker" reception gave students and industry rep’s an opportunity to meet in a relaxed setting.

The next day, Expo activities included a poster session for students to showcase their research to potential employers, and industry booth exhibits for students to ask questions, and solicit interviews. The Expo ended with an Awards Ceremony for the top 3 posters. Out of the 86 registered poster presenters, the following students were awarded:

  • First Place: John Galler, Tulane University
  • Second Place: Sonya Punch, University of Houston
  • Third Place: Laura Williams, Southern Illinois University

Why are these people smiling? Well everyone likes to be a winner.
These three lucky people completed the survey taken at the expo and
their names were drawing to receive these two books and a CD ROM
which AAPG and SEG had provided. Mike Mlynek, AAPG Student Chapter Coordinator
(2nd from left) enjoyed giving out the survey response prizes.

The sponsors had an opportunity to recruit from a diverse pool of over 215 registered students, from 68 different universities.
