A Memo From Mike:AAPG Bulletin Access ChangesEffective January 2004, Student member benefits no longer include the option of receiving the Bulletin in print (hard copy) format; on-line subscription only is available. The costs associated with printing and mailing the Bulletin requires we look for ways to economize and in order to keep student dues at the lowest rate possible. You will continue to receive the Explorer each month. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. Also, we have just recently changed the way students can access the online Bulletin in order to solve some software problems that has been causing login problems. I will try to walk you through how to view the Bulletin. From now on instead of using the MemberNet that you may have been familiar with you will now use the Members Only area. Log-in example/instructions:From the AAPG home page find on the left side the button for Members Only or use the drop-down menu at the top. This link takes you to a log-in page. For your username you will enter your email address that AAPG has on record.
Once you login there should be a button labeled AAPG Bulletin Online. I tested this for a number of students and I got it to work, but let me know if you are unsuccessful.
Student Chapter ReportsMany students have emailed me recently wondering what the Student Chapter reports should contain. I will give an idea of what they are required to contain, what I would like to see them contain, and lastly a refresher on when these reports are due. As you know there are two required reports per year, you may send more reports, in fact I encourage this, but the two are all that is required. In a Student Chapter report there must be a list of the updated officers with contact information; especially email addresses. There must also be a list of all the chapter members with their membership number listed. If any individual student needs their number, please email me and I can look it up for you. Next if there are any address changes for your chapters mailing address or Faculty Advisor I will need this pointed out. Lastly, there needs to be a short report over the activities that the chapter has participated in during the period covered. A well written report can be roughly two pages depending on the amount of members. I have received some excellent bound reports of up to twenty pages, and some marginal reports with merely a list of members. Now for what I would like to see in a report, and for those chapters that meet this quality I thank you again; I enjoy reading them. The items listed above should be in the report as well as the following items: In the fall report which is due on December 1st, there should be a list of the new officers for the next year as well as the Chapters plans for the following year. In the spring report there should be an assessment of how well the plans were carried out, what went wrong, what went right and why. From my understanding of what the Student Chapter program was designed to instill; leadership and professionalism were two main areas. These areas can be practiced by crafting well written reports as well as the planning, organization and execution steps of Chapter events. This type of planning and reporting is essential to determining which Chapters will win the Outstanding Student Chapter Awards at the AAPG Annual Meeting. In a future newsletter I will try to post a few examples of some excellent reports that I have received recently. If you would like more information on how to write your Chapters reports please let me know. About Those Membership Dues ...I have received the following question a number of times recently and will probably receive it a number of times in the future so I thought I would address it here.
The answer to this situation is that AAPG operates on a fiscal year schedule. This means that your yearly membership runs from July 1 until June 30th of the following year. So if Mr. Doe joined AAPG in January and chose the current Halliburton sponsorship, only a portion of the yearly dues would be assessed, thus your dues would come due at the same time that a person that joined a full year ago and paid the full dues would. The Halliburton payment option is currently renewable yearly. You must request this option each year; this process can be completed online in the dues payment section of the AAPG Web site. http://www.aapg.org/dues/index.html. Now lets say Mr. Doe joined by submitting a check with his membership in January and submitted the full amount, he would have been charged the partial amount and the remainder of the check would be credited to his account. So, basically the reason for this is to synchronize the dues statements for all members and to simplify our accounting. I hope that this will help you, if you have further questions feel free to ask. |
