A Memo From Mike:

Look for me at the AAPG Annual Meeting (try the General Store in the AAPG Center) as well as the AAPG/SEG Spring Expo held at OU April 22-24.

Student Directory Update:

As many of you may have noticed the button on the Student Chapter site labeled "Student Chapter Directory" has not been available. Look for this to change soon, here students and Student Chapters will be able to view information about other Student Chapters. The President of the Student Chapter’s email address will be provided so you may contact them. My hope is that this will foster more interaction among Student Chapters.

Ideas of joint fieldtrips, meeting travel and hosting assistance, as well as great networking opportunities with your future colleagues come to mind. This resource is what you make of it however; though I must admit I see great opportunity, and I encourage you all to utilize it.

However, if you are a Student Chapter President and do not want other Student Chapters to be able to email you, or if you would like to change the email we use to perhaps a Chapter email account, please let me know.

I feel this is also a great tool for Chapters to see what their status is, because if you do not see your current President’s contact information given it could be due to a lack of report filing. I will work to keep this list relatively current, and I hope you work to use it.

Where are you? The importance of keeping your contact information updated.

I have noticed recently that a number of Student problems as well as Student Chapter problems can be traced back to updating an address change with AAPG.

There have been a couple of students this month with problems of not receiving their Explorer. The problem was eventually solved by merely updating their address in the AAPG records. I know as a student I seemed to change my address every year and never thought anything about it until my favorite magazine did not show up.

Luckily you can likely forgo the terror of not receiving your AAPG Explorer every month by emailing Nancy at nancyi@aapg.org with your new contact information.

Important correspondence may not be reaching your Student Chapter if I have the wrong mailing address. Please remember to point out any address changes in the next Student Chapter report you submit or by emailing me the information.

Hope you received my letter.

Many of you probably received a letter from me recently dated mid to late February. In fact I know a lot of you received it because I have received many back already and an ominous stack is staring at me on the desk.

I have had a few calls and emails with questions, so I thought I might explain here.

There were different letters sent out, depending on your status with AAPG. Many of you merely had to update the graduation date that we have on record, and others were informed that their dues classification will change.

When a person joins AAPG as a student member, they are given 6 years of eligibility at the low student dues rate if they join as an undergraduate student, and 4 years if they join as a graduate student.

Much like your parents AAPG feels you should complete your degrees in this amount of time. Well, it didn’t work for me either.

So if you are still in school and have used this low dues rate eligibility up, you are then transferred to a slightly higher rate in the Associate class. The dues for this rate are $37.50 for US members and $47.50 for those outside the US.

Please continue to respond, I prefer to have the letter returned to me, but if all the information I need is included in an email, fax or phone call that is fine with me.

See you in Dallas!
