Student Reception

Bill Houston

Included in the Student Activities at the AAPG Annual Meeting was the ExxonMobil sponsored Student Reception. This event gave students the opportunity to meet other students, industry professionals, as well as be rewarded for their achievements. The reception was emceed by AAPG Student Chapter Vice-Chairman, Bill Houston.

Bob Stewart

Bob Stewart from ExxonMobil graciously welcomed and shared his insight with those students in attendance.

During the reception the 2004 Outstanding Student Chapter awards, sponsored by Schlumberger, were presented.

Louisiana State University received the National award. Lawerence Febo, LSU Student Chapter President, accepted the award and $1,000 award check.

The International Outstanding Student Chapter Award was presented to the University of Hasanuddin (UNHAS) Student Chapter in Indonesia. John Kaldi accepted the award and $1,000 check for UNHAS.

Cash awards were presented to the top students in the Student Paper and Poster Sessions. This opportunity was made possible by the generous support of the Shell Foundation.

The top winners for 2004 are as follows:

Paper (Oral) Session:

1st Place: $1,000.
David R. Pyles from the University of Colorado. Title: On the Stratigraphic Evolution of a Structurally-Confined , Submarine Basin-Carboniferous Ross Sandstone, Western Ireland.
2nd Place: $500.
Jonathan P. Allen from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Title: A Sedimentologic and Plant Taphonomic Evaluation of the Early Middle Devonian Trout Valley Formation, Maine.
3rd Place: $300.
Leonel Gomez from the University of Texas at Austin. Title: Predicting Macrofracture Spacing from Small Rock Samples: Testing New Analytical Techniques Using Microfracture Spacing.
4th Place: $200.
Sophia Luz Cobos from California State University. Title: Structural Interpretation of the Monagas Foreland and Thrust Belt, Eastern Venezuela.

These students' University Geology Departments received $2,000, $1,000, $600, and $400, respectively, for their students’ outstanding work.

Poster Session:

1st Place: $1,000.

Julymar Morantes from the University of Texas at Austin. Title: Mechanisms of Porosity Reduction of the Upper Cretaceous Sandstones in the Eastern Venezuela Basin: Carito Oil Field.

2nd Place: $500.

Galo Aristides Salcedo from the University of Kansas. Title: Depositional Environments of Lower Pennsylvanian Reservoir Sandstones, Southwestern Kansas.

3rd Place: $300.

Jeff Lonnee from the University of Alberta. Title: Complex Fluid Evolution in a Hydrothermal Dolomite Reservoir- Devonian Clarke Lake Gas Field, Canada.

4th Place: $200.
Lianshuang Qi from the University of Kansas. Title: Geostatistical 3-D Reservoir Modeling of Mississippian St. Louis Carbonate Reservoir Systems, Kansas.
