The Southwest Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Scholarships and Grants
The Southwest Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists is again offering scholarship assistance to deserving graduate and undergraduate students. To qualify, students should be engaged in geologic research, especially as it relates to the exploration for and development of petroleum, natural gas, and other energy minerals while enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies in geology or geologically related fields. The requirements for each scholarship are explained on the application, but an abstract of your thesis, as well as a copy of the thesis proposal signed by your advisor must accompany the application. Although the amount of the scholarship has yet to be determined, past graduate student recipients have been awarded scholarships of up to $1,500. It is not required, however we would encourage the recipients or any students doing scientific studies that relate to the geology in the Southwest Region to present their papers at the annual Southwest Section Convention. If requested and approved, the Southwest Section will help pay reasonable expenses incurred by any students presenting papers at the convention. The deadline for applications to be submitted is January 1, 2005. The scholarship will be presented before summer break, hopefully, by the local society affiliate. We hope students will take advantage of this opportunity as it is our goal to encourage as many students as possible to investigate and possibly pursue careers in petroleum geology. We also offer grant assistance to universities, middle schools and secondary schools, within the boundaries of the Southwest Section, to support Earth Science education. Upon written request, the Southwest Section will consider financially supporting specific educational activities, projects, or equipment that will further the education as it relates to the exploration for and development of petroleum, natural gas and other energy minerals, of students in those programs.
