The Foothills and Front Ranges of the Alberta Thrust Belt are perhaps the most extensively studied compressional petroleum province on earth. Within this system, thick sheets of Paleozoic carbonate strata were thrust progressively eastward into Mesozoic and Tertiary clastic assemblages of the developing Alberta Basin. The resulting geology forms a superb laboratory to view and analyze the components of thrust belt architecture and the development of petroleum systems in compressional settings.
The technical focus of the trip will be petroleum structural geology at the basin, trap, and wellbore scales. During field stops to well known localities west of Calgary the group will discuss thrust system evolution, 3D geometry, trap formation, development and characterization of reservoir-scale structures, and interpretation of seismic and wellbore data sets. The trip will begin with background presentations Wednesday, June 22nd, following the close of the AAPG convention. Field visits to classic structures along the Bow Valley will be made on the way to our overnight stop. During the following day, the trip will traverse south through the Front Ranges and culminate in a visit to a gas field developed in a complexly thrusted anticline, and hikes through exposed reservoir-scale structures and along prominent majestic viewpoints. The trip will end in Calgary Thursday evening, June 23rd.
