Student Reception
Bill Houston
Included in the Student Activities at the AAPG Annual Meeting was the ExxonMobil sponsored Student Reception. This event gave students the opportunity to meet other students, industry professionals, as well as be rewarded for their achievements. The reception was emceed by AAPG Student Chapter Chairman, Bill Houston.
Bob Stewart
Bob Stewart from ExxonMobil graciously welcomed and shared his insight with those students in attendance.
During the reception the 2005 Outstanding Student Chapter awards, sponsored by Schlumberger, were presented.
Stephen F. Austin State received the National award. Richard Ball, SFSU Student Chapter President, accepted the award and $1,000 award check.
The International Outstanding Student Chapter Award was presented to the Trisakti University Student Chapter in Indonesia. Chuck Caughey accepted the award and $1,000 check for the Chapter.
Cash awards were presented to the top students in the Student Paper and Poster Sessions. This opportunity was made possible by the generous support of the Shell Foundation.
The top winners for 2005 are as follows:
Paper (Oral) Session:
- 1st Place: $1,000.
- Anna-Jayne Zachariah from the University of Manchester. Title: Late Syn-Rift and Post-Rift Slope-to-Basin-Floor Depositional System, Lower Cretaceous, Oseberg Area, Norwegian North Sea.
- 2nd Place: $500.
- Stephanie Thomas from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Title: Glendonite Formation in Association with Methane Oxidation in the Middle Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone, Southern Sydney Basin, Australia.
- 3rd Place: $300.
- Nicholas Huerta from the University of California-Davis. Title: Neutron Computed Tomography (NCT) Applied to Studies of Porosity and Fluid Content in Porous Media. (Huerta unable to attend reception.)
- 4th Place: $200.
- D. Nahid Sultana from the University of Texas at Dallas. Title: What is Controlling the Gorge of the Nile in Ethiopia? An Integrated Approach from ASTER, RADARSAT, DEMs and Field Studies.
These students' University Geology Departments received $2,000, $1,000, $600, and $400, respectively, for their students outstanding work.
Poster Session:
- 1st Place: $1,000.
- Hong Tang from Louisiana State University. Title: Geostatistical Integration of Outcrop and Geophysical Data to Describe Diagenetic Heterogeneities for Flow Modeling, Frontier Formation, Wyoming.
- 2nd Place: $500.
- Ruth Underdown from the University of Manchester. Title: Influence of Uplift and Erosion on Hydrocarbon Maturation, Expulsion and Migration: An Integrated Analysis of the Ghadames Basin, North Africa.
- 3rd Place: $300.
- Cindy Hansen from Simon Fraser University. Title: Along-Strike Facies Variations in a Mixed Wave-and River-Influenced Delta Lobe, Upper Cretaceous Basal Belly River Formation, Ferrybank and Eastern Pembina Fields, Central Alberta.
