Student Chapter Reports:

One quick note about Student Chapter Reports, if a Chapter has not yet sent in its mid year or spring 2005 report please do so now.

Annual Meeting Observations:

I noticed a number of things at AAPG’s Annual meeting that was held in Calgary that I felt I should share here.

The Student Career Seminar:

This year marked the second year that the AAPG/SEG Student Expo Committee held a career seminar at the AAPG Annual Meeting. This year the Student Expo Vice Chair Kevin Hae Hae presented and discussed resumes. Please see the documents that were passed out here:

There was also a diverse panel that shared their career paths/experiences and tips. I thought it was extremely beneficial to hear the dialogue between students, panel members, and the large number of industry professionals and recruiters that attended.

The AAPG/SEPM Student Chapter Field trip was another great success; please see the group pictures here.

Field trip photos

I saw many great networking opportunities for students at the Student Reception as well as for those that worked in the General Store.

Start preparing for attending the 2006 AAPG Annual meeting in Houston. Student Chapters start pooling your resources with other close Student Chapters; approach your departments/Student Governments for funds early in the fall. I learned of one student from one University that traveled with another Chapter since his University was not attending the meeting. Bravo! This is what I am talking about.

Doing Research? Looking for information?:

I have had a number of emails from students this past month asking about access to technical data, primarily to the AAPG Bulletin Archives. Student members do not receive access to the full AAPG Bulletin Archives. There are a few solutions to this.

  1. Pay per article access.
  2. AAPG Datashare.
  3. This is what I am the most excited about Search and Discovery. Search and Discovery contains an astonishing amount of information. I just spent an hour reading articles and abstracts there and I am not a Geologist. This is an especially good site for students, because you can submit articles, and if they are good enough they could be posted here. What a powerful marketing tool to point potential employers to! So submit your work to the site editors and good luck.

Sincerely,

Mike
