Memo from Mike
be sure to read it!

Dear Students,

It has been a very busy last couple of months here at AAPG, and it seems the planning for future Expo's and AAPG meetings never stops. For example for those of you attending the 2006 AAPG Annual meeting in Houston next April the AAPG/SEG Student Expo Committee's Career Seminar will be directly before the Exxon sponsored Student Reception. This should create an excellent opportunity for students to learn, network, collect awards, and have a nice meal. I hope to see many of you there!

I hope you are keeping up with all of AAPG's programs and benefits, such as the exciting opportunity to attend the Winter Education Conference mentioned in this newsletter. I must say it is an exciting time in the Energy industry, as I can attest from observing the 2005 AAPG/SEG Student Expo; companies need you, and they are looking.

There are a few things I want to make you aware of right now:

1. Time is running out to apply for the 2005-06 Student Chapter Bookgift. The deadline to apply is November 25th, to apply please click here and return the completed form. This gift is currently $250 in AAPG Bookstore products and available to Active AAPG Student Chapters once every three years.

2. The L. Austin Weeks Grant. Please see here for more details as well as a pdf of the application form. A quick way to determine if you are eligible. Are you an AAPG Student Chapter? Have you submitted a mid year Student Chapter report in (May-June) for 2005? Will you have the application form and your Chapters end of year report to me at AAPG before December 1, 2005?

If you can answer yes to these questions, there should not be a problem.

3. A question I have been asked often by students via email, concerns the AAPG Bulletin archieves.

Student members of AAPG receive the AAPG Bulletin via electronic access through the Members Only section of the website, along with a yearly CD-ROM containg the years issues. Also through the Members Only area students can access up to three years past issues.

However students do not pay sufficient dues to grant access to the full Bulletin archieve.

But I have a suggestion on how your Student Chapter/University can get access for you.

Please see these two pages:

University Subscription Endowment

University Library Access

Concerning the second method, I really feel that if a number of students (or a Student Chapter) worked with your Department/Dean or the University Library and expressed a genuine interest that your University would pay for you to have campus wide access.

What a great opportunity for Student Chapter leadership, be the President or Executive team that gets your school the access to all of this information!

Needed Survey Volunteers for the Oil and Gas Investor magazine:

I was recently contacted by the Oil and Gas Investor magazine, about a survey they are conducting.

They need 4-5 recent graduates with either a MS or PhD that are currently employed to answer a few survey questions. If you are interested please contact Jennifer at jcorona1@houston.rr.com.

Thanks for your help with this.

Sincerely,

Mike Mlynek
